Matthew Mahoney, PT, DPT, OCS, CSCS

Owner/ Physical Therapist

Background

Dr. Matthew Mahoney is a physical therapist, an educator, and golf performance enthusiast who has been working with active individuals and athletes with orthopedic/sports injuries to return back to the activities and sports they love.  He opened Active Pursuit in November 2023 to provide the best physical therapy care to the active community of  Westhampton Beach and surrounding areas.

Matt graduated from Stony Brook University's Physical Therapy Program in the top 10% of his class as a member of the Alpha Eta Honor Society for Allied Health Professionals.  In constant pursuit  to improve his knowledge base and clinical proficiency, he achieved the advanced specialization of a Board-Certified Orthopedic Specialist (OCS) through the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

Prior to becoming a Physical Therapist, Matt was a PGA Golf Professional, both playing at a high level and coaching players of all abilities.  After experiencing a shoulder injury that sidelined him from playing, Matt discovered the power of physical therapy during his own rehab process that got him back on the golf course. Matt’s combined knowledge and training as a physical therapist along with experience a former golf professional gives him a unique ability to help golfers return to the top of their game following injury, along with maximizing their physical abilities for their golf swing, all while  effectively communicating with your golf coach/instructor to maximize your game.

Matt has also spent many years working with active individuals/athletes, both as a Crossfit coach and Strength and Conditioning Specialist while attending Physical Therapy School.  He understands the demands of these athletes in their sport, which allows him to implement a comprehensive rehab program to get them back to playing at a high level.

Additionally, Matt stays involved with his Alma Mater as a teaching assistant in the physical therapy program at Stony Brook University, assisting with Kinesiology, Orthopedics, and Advanced Therapeutic Exercise classes.

Treatment Approach

The main philosophy at Active Pursuit is there is no one size fits all approach.  What may work for one patient, may not work for another, which is why a comprehensive assessment is the foundation for each individual to create an effective personalized treatment program.  It is this focus on the individual that helps deliver the most productive rehab experience, and also why many who have not seen improvements in other physical therapy practices seek a second opinion with us.  Our 1-on-1 treatments sessions with this individual approach give us the best opportunity to create the most effective positive changes.

Matt uses a wide variety of techniques to work with his patients including targeted manual therapy techniques, corrective exercises, neuromuscular re-education (improving movement patterns), and extensive education so the patient understands not just what we are doing, but why we are doing them.

Personal Life

When not working, you can find Matt spending time with his wife and daughter exploring the local area, golfing, fishing, and various other outdoor activities.
